Foraging for Blueberries in Whittier, Alaska

Recently we drove over to Whittier, Alaska, a small town on the ocean. Our goal was mainly to spend some time outside, and hopefully find a spot to forage for blueberries. Both were accomplished!

First, a little history about the town of Whittier. The only way to access the town by land is to go through a 2.5 mile one-lane tunnel or hike over the mountain the tunnel is bored through. The tunnel was originally built during WWII as a railroad tunnel, and it was opened for public use in 2000. It is the longest multi-use tunnel in North America, and it’s pretty interesting to drive through. If you make a trip to Alaska, then you definitely need to visit Whittier. Learn more here.

We ended up finding about 4.5 cups of blueberries that day, as well as a handful of cloud berries. I ended up just freezing the majority of the berries we foraged that day, but you can do so many things with berries. Berries can be made into pie, syrup, jam, you can dehydrate or freeze dry them. We love to use berries (fresh or frozen) in cereal, on pancakes or waffles, and on top of some chocolate ice cream.
